NEW CAUCUS SELECTS GOVERNING BOARD:
On Saturday,
September 13th, the New
Caucus elected a nine-person Governing
Board. Under the revised bylaws, the
Governing Board (1) serves as a nominating committee to recommend
candidates for PSC-wide elections, (2) appoints the coordinators and
(3) recommends a course of action for the coordinators. The
following were elected to the board (listed alphabetically):
Barbara Bowen, Lorraine Cohen, Bill Friedheim, Donna Gill,
Rebecca Hill, Carl Lindskoog, Cecelia McCall, Eileen Moran,
Marcia Newfield.
NOMINATING CONVENTION:
The
New Caucus
will nominate its slate for the PSC-CUNY elections on Saturday,
December 6th, 10 am to 1 pm, location to be determined. We expect
that the election, to be held this coming April, will be contested.
Save the date. This is a very important meeting.
ELECTIONS:
In
April, 2008, New Caucus slates won chapter elections at Bronx
CC, Brooklyn, Hostos, Hunter, John Jay, LAGCC, Queens and the CLT
chapter. New Caucus friendly slates also won at Baruch, York
and the Central Office. At CCNY, the New Caucus won the
chapter chair, but not a majority of the executive committee
positions.
In April,
2007, the New Caucus ran slates in five chapter elections - BMCC, College of Staten Island, HEOs, Kingsborough and New York City
Technical College. Incumbent slates won by wide margins in all
elections. The New Caucus was the victorious incumbent slate in
all of those elections except Kingsborough. The New Caucus was
not contested at NYCTC and CSI, but did face opposing slates in the
HEO and BMCC elections, winning by approximately two to one in both.
At Kingsborough, the New Caucus challenged the long-time incumbents
for the first time, losing but establishing a base for the
next time. Click

contested elections.
WHO WE ARE:
"In
1995, the New Caucus began as an insurgent group within the
Professional Staff Congress (PSC).... It had a twofold purpose: to
transform the union into an agency that would fight for workers'
rights and social justice; and to protect the right of New Yorkers
to attend the City University of New York, working to keep it open,
accessible, and of high quality to improve the lives of the students
and their families. In order to do this, the New Caucus knew it was
necessary to see an active, engaged membership working
collaboratively with labor, students and community groups."
With
these words (above), the Northstar Foundation described the New
Caucus in 2001 when it gave us its annual Frederick Douglass Award.
Since 2000, New Caucus has been the elected leadership of the
central union and has worked “collaboratively with labor, students
and community groups” to fulfill the goals described in Northstar’s
tribute. In areas of common interest, we have worked cooperatively
with CUNY Administration. Click

and our accomplishments.
